What are automotive air filters?

Your car actually has two different air filters, which might confuse casual car owners who don’t know as much about the different parts of their vehicle. The two air filters your car has are the cabin air filter and engine air filter and both are important parts of your vehicle. The cabin air filter is tied to the climate system in your vehicle – aka your heating and air conditioning, while the engine air filter filters out the air that enters your engine before combustion.

What air filter services are available?

Unlike some other aspects of your vehicle, there isn’t a laundry list of different kinds of services available when it comes to your air filters. You’ll simply replace them once the time is right. It’s important to replace these filters regularly to make sure that both filtration systems work properly. Your cabin air filter can’t effectively keep pollen, bacteria, dust and other particulates out of your cabin if it’s too dirty, nor can your engine air filter do the same for your powertrain.

When should I get air filter service?

As with all automotive services, you should turn your attention to the owner’s manual for an exact recommendation on when and how often you should be replacing your air filters. Using a general rule of thumb, your engine air filter should typically be replaced once a year or every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, while your cabin air filter should be replaced between every 15,000 to 30,000 miles, whenever it becomes dirty and clogged enough to warrant replacement.
