Helping Hands Humane Society was so grateful to get to join forces with the ASPCA/BriggsSubaru - Grace C.

Helping Hands Humane Society was so grateful to get to join forces with the ASPCA/Briggs Subaru our ASPCA Subaru Loves Pets campaign in October of 2024. One of the pets impacted from this partnership was Queen. On October 6, 2024, Queen, a sweet 7-month-old puppy, found herself at our shelter after an officer witnessed her being hit by a car outside a local Mexican restaurant. Miraculously, she didn’t suffer any injuries, just a bit shaken up. The officer, clearly moved by her, mentioned that if no one came forward to claim her, he would adopt her himself. We immediately began efforts to locate Queen's owner, hoping to reunite them and get her the help she needed. But after days of searching and no luck, the officer returned to the shelter—true to his word—and officially adopted Queen. She’s now in the perfect home, surrounded by love and care, and we couldn't be happier for her. It’s stories like these that remind us of the power of kindness, and how sometimes, the right person is right there when a pet needs them most. From our staff: As an adoption manager, I can't express enough how much we appreciate the 2024 ASPCA Subaru Loves Pets campaign. The support and resources provided through this initiative have truly made a difference in our ability to connect more animals with loving homes. Thanks to Subaru’s generosity, we’ve been able to offer even more life-saving care and find forever families for so many pets who otherwise might have waited even longer. This partnership has had a profound impact on our shelter, and we are so grateful for their continued commitment to animals in need.

Fun times Volunteering at the Topeka food pantry - Bryan B.

From the moment I stepped into the pantry, I was greeted by a sea of friendly faces, both volunteers and recipients alike. And right in the thick of it were the Briggs Subaru crew, led by the ever-enthusiastic Mickey Lockhart. Mickey wasn't just there to supervise – he was shoulder-to-shoulder with everyone else, packing boxes, sorting donations, and even cracking jokes to keep the energy high. It was clear that this wasn't just a PR stunt for them; they were genuinely invested in making a difference. Their efforts were evident in every corner. The pantry was organized and well-stocked, thanks to the generous donations they'd helped collect. The volunteers, many of whom were Briggs Subaru employees, were friendly, efficient, and truly compassionate. And the recipients, who were facing food insecurity, were treated with dignity and respect. What truly struck me was the sense of community that Briggs Subaru fostered. They didn't just show up and do their own thing; they integrated seamlessly with the existing volunteers and pantry staff. It was a beautiful collaboration, fueled by a shared desire to help those in need. Mickey Lockhart deserves special mention. His infectious enthusiasm and genuine care were truly inspiring. He wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty, and he always had a kind word or a helping hand for everyone. He embodied the spirit of Briggs Subaru's commitment to community, and it was truly heartwarming to see. If you're looking for a car dealership that values more than just a bottom line, I urge you to consider Briggs Subaru. Their dedication to the Topeka community, as exemplified by their work at the food pantry, is truly commendable. They're not just selling cars; they're building relationships and making a real difference in people's lives. So, thank you, Briggs Subaru, and thank you, Mickey Lockhart, for shining a light on the importance of community service. You've earned more than just five stars; you've earned the respect and gratitude of everyone who witnessed your heartwarming efforts.

Blue finds his family during shelter over-capacity! - Grace C.

In September of 2023, Helping Hands Humane Society launched a “slumber party for pets” program due to severe overcapacity. We asked our community to please come take a dog for 2-4 weeks to house in their home as a foster until we could open kennel space. The Dimick family stepped forward as the first participants in the slumber party program. Our hope was that once we started the October event with the ASPCA and Subaru Loves Pets program, in partnership with Briggs Subaru, that we would see an increase in adoptions and we just needed to keep kennel capacity balanced until the event started. The Dimick family agreed to take Blue, a 4 year old male pitbull who had been in the shelter since July of 2023. They said they’d hang on to Blue for the shelter until an adopter came forward. During their 4 weeks with Blue, not one other family called interested in adopting Blue. It was then they realized that they just couldn’t imagine their life without him. On October 6th, just one week into our virtual adoption partnership with Briggs Subaru, they decided to adopt Blue and officially add him as a member of the Dimick family. Blue was $0 to adopt thanks to this special and he is happily staying in his new home! He never had to come back to the shelter, thanks to this special.

HHHS 2022 Adoption Night Story - Tony R.

As part of our year-long partnership with Briggs Subaru of Topeka, our organization celebrated Subaru Loves Pets and National Make a Dog’s Day by hosting an adoption event, aptly called “the Pit Stop”. This event was a month long celebration of animals where Briggs Subaru and the ASPCA donated to cover adoption fees for animals needing homes at our shelter! We culminated the month-long event with an in-person pawww-ty at Briggs Subaru where the show room floor was transformed and instead of showing vehicles, we got to show off adoptable dogs! When you walk into Briggs Subaru, it’s evident their commitment to the pets and people in our community. They have placards about adopting on all their staff desks and plenty of happy family pet portraits in their lobby. We are excited to say that ALL the animals we took out to Briggs Subaru are sleeping in their forever homes right now. We couldn’t do this incredible cupid-level match making work without the support of Briggs Subaru and we are beyond grateful!

Briggs Helps Pets Find Homes - Emi G.

Nationwide, shelters and rescues have been seeing a dramatic increase in dog intakes as well as length of stay for dogs this year. Our local shelter realized that in order to get pets into homes, we needed to recognize the financial strains on our community and reduce adoption fees. When we reduce adoption fees, this is a major financial loss to our shelter because we invest so much time, money, and love into pets before they find their home. Briggs Subaru has not only rallied around our shelter by donating very generously to offset adoption fees and keep costs low for both the shelter and new pet parents, but they’ve been sponsoring the microchipping of pets so that pets can stay in the homes who love them and be reunited should they slip out the door. When you walk into Briggs Subaru, it’s evident their commitment to the pets and people in our community. They have placards about adopting on all their staff desks and plenty of happy family pet portraits in their lobby. They have helped make HUNDREDS of love connections this year! We couldn’t be more grateful and proud of Briggs Subaru for their true and deep commitment to our local shelter.

Subaru Loves Pets - Mia - Shelby R.

Mia had been in our local shelter for 200 days. She was a little timid with new people and would get a little anxious so she didn’t always present the best. Once she opened to people, she was loving and charming as could be. We knew the perfect home was out there for her and we were determined to stick with her until her family came. On her 200th day, she was adopted! She’s had many new adventures with her new family – including a hiking trip and learning to sleep in a bed! Thank you Briggs Subaru for donating funds that allowed us to continue caring for Mia and for covering the cost of her adoption!

BRIGGS SUBARU HELPS PETS FIND THEIR FUREVER HOME - Tony R.

On behalf of Helping Hands Humane Society I want to tell our community what a wonderful partner that Briggs Subaru is. We started working together a number of years ago to help get pets adopted and Briggs would provide the shelter financial support to provide care to our animals. In January of 2021, Sales Manager Tony Rubbo approached us about doing an ongoing adoption partnership. Mr. Rubbo said he’s realized that ipads don’t make people happy, money can’t make people happy, but that pets can make people happy and that humans and animals deserve a chance to be together. Helping Hands Humane Society has always striven to emphasize that the love between pets and people can’t be determined by a dollar sign. In order to meet this mission, Briggs Subaru has committed to “putting pets in homes” by donating every single month to offset adoption fees. We use these fees to help make adopting more accessible by reducing adoption fees for animals that could benefit from a boost and to help people take a second look at adopting. This also allows us to offer a variety of adoption price ranges for families interested in adding a new family member to their home. Briggs Subaru also donates to enable us to use those funds to provide needed medical care and intervention to animals in critical need that may not have had the chance to find their forever home without this life-saving help. We are beyond grateful to Briggs Subaru and to Tony Rubbo for advocating for the human-animal bond and for committing to help make it happen by “putting pets in homes”.Thank you Briggs Subaru. Wynonna finds a home! - Grace C.

So far in 2021, Helping Hands Humane Society has helped 4,700 pets! We couldn’t have done it without the help of Briggs Subaru. Briggs has not only sponsored adoption fees all year long to help us find homes for these animals and help families be able to obtain the pet-loving life they dream of! One of our favorite stories happened in October of 2021. As part of our partnership, Briggs Subaru hosted our organization to come out and celebrate our shared love of animals. Mr. Rubbo had provided refreshments and we brought out the cute snuggles! We decided to take a little docked-eared bully mix named Wynonna who had come in as a stray out because we really want to educate people that an animal’s appearance doesn’t determine their temperament, we want people to know that shelter animals have a lot of love to give, despite whatever background they came from. While at the event, Wynonna was an absolute STAR and stole the hearts of all who were there. She also managed to get herself adopted by a Briggs staff at the event which couldn’t have made us happier! We are so grateful for all that Briggs Subaru does to support our mission and their dedication to put pets in homes.

Covering Adoption Fees During a Global Pandemic - Emi G.

Two days before the Safer at Home order in March of 2020 went into place in Shawnee County, Helping Hands Humane Society employees were scrambling to find homes in the community for adoptable dogs. “We knew we wouldn’t be able to hold regular adoptions for quite some time, and more than anything we wanted the dogs on the adoption floor to be in loving homes ASAP,” said Grace Clinton, Director of Business Development and Special Events. HHHS’s Foster Coordinator, Jenna Petesch, devised a plan to quickly recruit fosters and place dogs, cats, and even adoptable rats, in their homes for the duration of Safer at Home. This would allow staff ability to take care of the pets who were waiting final steps to be available for adoption and limit the number of persons in the building. The Topeka community stepped up in a huge way and by the end of the day before Safer at Home, the adoptable dog room was empty because they were all settled comfortably into foster homes! Briggs Subaru didn’t want there to be any barriers to adoption for these amazing families who had offered to foster; if any fosters decided they wanted to turn temporary into forever, Briggs Subaru generously covered the adoption fees. From three special rats including an albino rat named Angel who is very affectionate and brings joy to her family, to a loveable and fiesty one-eyed Chihuahua mix, Jerry, who is missing half of his bottom jaw so his tongue always sticks out, to a biiiig butter-stealing, toy-loving chocolate Lab mix named Badger, over 70 pets found permanent homes from the COVID-19 Emergency Foster Project adoptions in March 2020 sponsored by Briggs Subaru of Topeka!

October 2020 Fall Event with HHHS - Grace C.

Helping Hands Humane Society is extraordinarily grateful for our partnership with Briggs Subaru here in Topeka, KS. In the fall of 2020, we were able to partner together to reduce adoption fees for the entire month of October to help us maintain our shelter numbers, as well as provide affordable adoption rates for families while continuing to cover the cost of care for the animals sheltered here. Staff and volunteers kicked off the event at Briggs Subaru’s location on October 1st, 2020 with adoptable animals, including a little puppy with a broken leg named Mr. Tony Rubbo! This event kicked off the month long campaign, and while we were limited in hosting large-scale events due to COVID-19, we were so eager and excited to get to show our solidarity as two businesses who love animals, and show our biggest group of supporters just how much Subaru loves pets! With these needed funds, we were able to continue combatting pet overpopulation in our community by covering sterilization costs of adoptable animals to get them healthy and into their new homes while preventing our shelter from getting filled up again. We provide so much love and care to the more than 6,000 animals housed each year here at HHHS and we couldn’t do it without supporters such as Briggs Subaru!
