Subaru service in Topeka

Kansas heat, cold and dust each change the schedule. Here is what your mileage calls for, settled before you book.

A technician taking a wheel off a Subaru raised on a lift.

What is the first thing to know about Subaru service in Topeka?

Two things shorten a Subaru's intervals. High humidity halves the brake fluid interval. Frequent severe use halves the drivetrain fluid intervals. Both are decided by where the car goes.

So we ask those questions first. After them come the six-month service interval, the all-wheel drive fluids and where the warranty ends.

Where a condition depends on how you drive, we ask you, and you decide.

How do you book a visit?

Two questions before any mileage

Humidity halves the brake fluid interval and severe use halves the drivetrain fluids. We ask where and how you drive before we read the odometer.

All-wheel drive adds fluids to the schedule

A Subaru drives all four wheels, so the differential and transmission gear oils are on the schedule. They are inspected every 30,000 miles and replaced every 15,000 under severe use.

The service drive opens at seven

It opens an hour and a half before the showroom, Monday to Friday, and Saturday until two. Your car is in before your day starts.

How does a visit to Briggs Subaru of Topeka go?

Step 1: Answer the two conditions questions first

Humidity and severe use each shorten a different interval, and they decide your schedule.

Step 2: Book with the mileage and the model year

The 6-month or 6,000-mile interval applies to 2015 and newer models, and the Solterra runs on its own schedule.

Step 3: Drop off from 7:00 AM, or take Saturday morning

The service drive opens before the showroom and runs to 2:00 PM on Saturday. Your car is in before your day starts.

Step 4: We pull the history against the VIN

We also check whether an Added Security or maintenance plan still covers the work.

Step 5: Inspection results come back as numbers

On the drivetrain fluids especially, an inspection has a reading and you hear it.

Step 6: Say yes to what you want today

What you leave is written down, so the next visit starts from a record.

Book the visit

Where you drive decides what is due.

Two of Subaru's intervals shorten with driving conditions. Tell us where the car goes, and we set the schedule to match.

Say when you book whether you are waiting. Dropping the car at seven and waiting for it are two different mornings, and we plan for either.

What do Topeka drivers ask us about Subaru service in Topeka?

I want to know…

Can I have a car while you have mine?

A loaner is easiest to arrange when you book, so mention it then.

  • We check early whether a loaner is open on your day.
  • Check with us on how long the work should take.
  • We tell you what to bring to take a loaner.
  • We tell you whether waiting would be quicker.

Raise it at booking and we tell you what is open on your day. That is far easier than arranging it that morning.

Planning your Subaru service? Ask us

Send the VIN and tell us where the car goes. We read Subaru's conditions with you and check what any plan still covers. We also tell you about any open recall on the car.

What should you know before servicing a Subaru in Topeka?

1. Subaru severe use maintenance in Kansas

Subaru's conditionWhat it brings forwardWhere it shows up in Kansas
High humidityBrake fluid, to 15 months or 15,000 milesA Kansas August, for a car kept outside.
Repeated short tripsOil and filter, to 3 months or 3,000 milesThe school drop-off and the grocery run.
Rough or gravel roadsBrake fluid, pads, discs and axle joint coversRural Kansas miles.
Roads treated with saltFuel lines, brake fluid, brakes, steering and suspensionEvery winter on I-70.
Extremely cold weatherOil and filter, steering and suspension, wheel bearingsJanuary.
Repeated trailer towingBoth drivetrain gear oils, to a replacement every 15,000 milesAnyone with a boat or a camper.

Severe use is defined condition by condition, and each condition moves specific items. Kansas meets several of them in one year. Humidity comes in August, and salt and cold in January. There is gravel on the county roads, and towing for anyone with a boat at Perry Lake.

Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air, and moisture lowers its boiling point. Short trips halve the oil interval because the engine never reaches full temperature.

Tell us where the car goes and how it is used. If the answer is the daily interstate commute, the standard schedule is right and we say so. For gravel, a trailer or a car that lives outside, we set the lines that apply on your VIN.

2. Subaru oil change interval, 6 months or 6,000 miles

The serviceHow oftenWhat it means
Engine oil and filter6 months or 6,000 miles, whichever comes firstOil breaks down chemically over time; a garage-kept Outback reaches six months without being driven much.
Cabin air filter12 months or 12,000 milesEvery 12 months, against 30 for the engine air filter.
Engine air filter30 months or 30,000 milesListed on the schedule as the air cleaner element.
Brake fluid30 months or 30,000 miles, halved in humidityFully replaced.
The bigger visits30, 60, 90 and 120 monthsWhere several items fall due at once.

The schedule applies to 2015 and newer cars, and its two halves cover two different problems. Oil breaks down over time whether the car moves or not, and it wears from heat and friction in use.

A car doing 3,000 miles a year follows the calendar half of the schedule.

Bring the car in and we read its history off the VIN, which tells us more than the odometer alone.

A technician draining the oil from a Subaru raised on a lift.

3. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive fluid service

The fluidNormal useSevere use
Front and rear differential gear oilInspected every 30 months or 30,000 milesReplaced every 15 months or 15,000 miles
Transmission gear oilInspected every 30 months or 30,000 milesReplaced every 15 months or 15,000 miles
BRZ rear differential oilReplaced every 4 years or 60,000 milesThe rear-drive car follows its own line
SolterraNo drivetrain gear oilIts schedule comes from the VIN

This is the part of a Subaru schedule that is new to a driver arriving from a front-wheel-drive car. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive adds gear oil lines. Under normal use, nothing comes off the car until a check finds a reason.

Under severe use, both move from an inspection every 30,000 miles to a replacement every 15,000. That is a different schedule to plan around. Towing is the trigger, so we talk it through early if you pull a trailer.

We inspect and report, then you decide. An inspection result is a number you hear first, and the 90,000-mile visit is planned ahead.

4. Subaru warranty terms for basic, powertrain, wear items and maintenance

CoverageTermWhat it covers
Basic3 years or 36,000 milesThe whole car, including the original 12 volt battery.
Powertrain5 years or 60,000 milesEngine block and internals, cylinder heads and valve trains, oil pump and pan, timing belt.

A recall comes with a free repair, and all it takes from you is a booking. The February 1998 cutoff is a detail we check for you.

We check by the VIN of your exact car. A check every three months picks up any campaign that opens after the last one.

Recall work is scheduled with a realistic time. If a campaign is likely to run longer, we tell you at booking so you can plan your morning.

Subaru service questions, answered

Where you drive

Does humidity change my brake fluid interval?

Yes. In high humidity or mountainous areas, brake fluid is changed every 15,000 miles or 15 months. The standard interval is 30,000 miles or 30 months. We talk through whether your driving qualifies.

What does severe use change?

Most visibly the drivetrain fluids: the front and rear differential gear oil and the transmission gear oil. Under frequent severe driving conditions, they move from a 30,000-mile inspection to a 15,000-mile replacement.

I drive a lot of gravel and rural miles. Does that count?

Tell us about it and we set the schedule to match. Severe use is defined by driving conditions, so rural Kansas miles count differently from interstate miles.

How often service is due

How often does a Subaru need servicing?

Every 6 months or 6,000 miles, whichever comes first, for 2015 and newer model years, excluding the Solterra.

The car barely gets driven. Does it still need an oil change?

Yes. Engine oil is changed every 6 months even when you rarely drive. Oil breaks down chemically over time as well as wearing from use.

How often does the cabin filter need changing?

Every 12 months or 12,000 miles. The engine air filter runs much longer, at 30 months or 30,000 miles. The two run on separate clocks.

Which visits are the heavy ones?

The 30, 60, 90 and 120 columns. Brake fluid, the engine air filter and the drivetrain inspections often fall due together there.

All-wheel drive care

What extra fluids does a Subaru have?

Front and rear differential gear oil and transmission gear oil, on a 30-month or 30,000-mile inspection cycle. A front-wheel drive car does not carry those lines at all.

Are those fluids inspected or replaced?

Inspected under standard conditions. Under frequent severe use both move to replacement every 15,000 miles or 15 months.

Is the BRZ the same?

The BRZ follows its own line. Its rear differential gear oil is replaced every 4 years or 60,000 miles.

What the warranty covers

How long is the warranty on a new Subaru?

Basic coverage is 3 years or 36,000 miles on all models. Powertrain coverage is 5 years or 60,000 miles. Each runs whichever comes first.

What counts as a wear item?

Three are covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles, brake pad and shoe linings, clutch linings and wiper blades. Anything else that wears is maintenance.

Does a new Subaru come with free servicing?

A Subaru maintenance plan settles the servicing the factory warranty requires in advance, and we arrange it here.

How long is the Solterra battery covered?

The battery and electric drive units are covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. A capacity retention threshold applies, and capacity below it is a warranty claim.

Plans and certified pre-owned

How many Added Security plans are there?

Two, Classic and Gold Plus. Classic is powertrain coverage plus named major systems, and Gold Plus adds virtually every other part. It is the only extended service agreement backed by Subaru of America itself.

What is checked before a Subaru is certified?

A 152-point safety inspection, with anything failing Subaru's standard repaired or replaced. All open recalls and campaigns are completed before the car can be certified.

How long is certified powertrain coverage?

7 years or 100,000 miles with no deductible, running from the car's original warranty start date. We give you the in-service date on each before you compare two certified cars.

Is there anything included with new tires?

Any tire you buy here comes with the Subaru 24-Month Tire Protection Plan at no charge, covering replacement or repair.

Servicing and the warranty

Does my warranty depend on servicing here?

The warranty stays in effect as long as the schedule is kept and the invoices show it. Servicing here keeps that record on your VIN, with factory-trained technicians and Genuine Subaru parts.

When does the warranty decide where the work happens?

Where the warranty itself is paying. If the work is free under warranty, the manufacturer can direct where it happens and whose parts are used.

What if a part someone else installed causes a problem?

The manufacturer has to show that the part caused the damage, so the burden of proof is not on you.

Your service visit

When does the service lane open?

Monday to Friday from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and Saturday 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The lane opens an hour and a half before the showroom does.

Can I work while I wait?

Tell us at booking if you plan to wait, and we set the visit up around it.

Recalls on your car

How do I check for a Subaru recall?

Enter your VIN on Subaru's recall lookup, or give it to us and we check it at the desk. Recalls issued before February 1998 do not appear in that lookup. On an older car, we check the federal recall record as well.

Is my Subaru affected by the Takata airbag recall?

Subaru maintains a dedicated page for it, scoped to the passenger-side front airbag inflator in certain vehicles. Give us your VIN and we check it for you.

People also ask

How often should a Subaru be serviced?

Every 6 months or 6,000 miles, whichever comes first, for 2015 and newer model years other than the Solterra. Each half has its own reason. Oil breaks down chemically over time, and it wears from heat and friction in use.

When should Subaru brake fluid be changed?

Every 30 months or 30,000 miles standard. That halves to 15,000 miles or 15 months for vehicles used in high humidity areas or mountainous areas.

What extra servicing does Subaru all-wheel drive need?

Front and rear differential gear oil and transmission gear oil, inspected every 30 months or 30,000 miles. Under frequent severe driving conditions, both are replaced every 15,000 miles or 15 months.

Does Subaru include free maintenance?

A Subaru maintenance plan settles the scheduled servicing the factory warranty requires in advance. We set it up here.

How long is Subaru certified pre-owned coverage?

A factory-backed 7-year or 100,000-mile powertrain vehicle service agreement, with no deductible, after a 152-point safety inspection. It runs from the original warranty start date, not the resale date.

How do I check a Subaru recall by VIN?

Subaru's recall lookup takes a VIN directly, and we can run it for you at the desk. It covers recalls issued from February 1998. On an older car, we also check the federal record by make, model and year.
