Life around Topeka has a way of filling up your weekends. There's a lake trip on the calendar, a campsite you've been wanting to try, or a trailer of yard gear that needs to get across town. When your plans come with a trailer, the first question is simple: how much can your SUV pull?

That's where the 2026 Subaru Forester comes in. This guide covers the Subaru Forester towing capacity for every trim, what you need before you hook up, and the features that make the Forester a dependable partner on Kansas roads. By the end, you'll know exactly which Forester belongs on your shopping list.

What Is the Subaru Forester Towing Capacity?

The Subaru Forester towing capacity is 1,500 pounds on most 2026 trims and 3,500 pounds on the 2026 Forester Wilderness. That rating covers all ten trims in the lineup, including every hybrid model.

Here's how it breaks down by trim:

2026 Subaru Forester towing capacity by trim: Wilderness tows up to 3,500 pounds; Base, Premium, Premium Hybrid, Sport, Sport Hybrid, Limited, Limited Hybrid, Touring and Touring Hybrid each tow up to 1,500 pounds.

The takeaway is easy to remember. Nine trims share the same 1,500-pound rating, and one trim, the Wilderness, more than doubles it. If towing sits at the top of your wish list, the Wilderness deserves a close look. If your hauling needs are lighter, you can choose any trim based on the comfort, tech, and fuel economy you want.

Which 2026 Subaru Forester Trim Tows the Most?

The Forester Wilderness tows the most, with a maximum rating of 3,500 pounds. It's the rugged member of the Forester family, built to keep going once the pavement ends.

The Wilderness rides with 9.3 inches of ground clearance, the most in the lineup. Every other Forester gets 8.7 inches. That extra height helps you clear ruts, rocks, and other obstacles when the road to your campsite gets rough. The Wilderness also comes with dual-function X-MODE, which gives you dedicated settings for snow, dirt, deep snow, and mud.

Put those pieces together and you get a compact SUV that can pull a heavier load and still handle rough terrain with confidence. If your weekends lean toward trails and back roads, this is the trim to test drive first.

Can the Subaru Forester Hybrid Tow?

Yes. Every 2026 Forester Hybrid trim can tow up to 1,500 pounds, including the Premium Hybrid, Sport Hybrid, Limited Hybrid, and Touring Hybrid.

That's the same 1,500-pound rating you get on the gas Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Touring trims. Subaru builds the Forester Hybrid as the fuel-efficient choice in the family, and the Forester lineup reaches up to 35 MPG (EPA estimate; actual mileage will vary).

The hybrid makes a smart pick if most of your miles are daily drives around Topeka with a light trailer on the occasional weekend. You save at the pump during the week and still have towing ability when you need it.

What Do You Need Before You Tow With a Forester?

You need a tow hitch accessory installed before you tow with a Forester. Depending on what you plan to pull, you may also need an electronic brake controller and towing mirrors.

A few smart steps before your first trip:

  • Add up your total weight. Your rating covers the trailer plus everything loaded on it, so tally the full load before you hit the road.

  • Read your owner's manual. It has the towing instructions for your specific Forester, and your safe limit also depends on your vehicle and equipment setup.

  • Ask about Genuine Subaru towing accessories. The team at Briggs Subaru of Topeka can walk you through the right hitch and gear for your trailer.

How Does Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive Help on Kansas Roads?

Every 2026 Subaru Forester comes with standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, which keeps power flowing to all four wheels. The system checks your acceleration, braking, and cornering in real time. When a wheel slips, power shifts in an instant to the wheels with the best grip.

That's a big help when you leave Topeka in rain, snow, or on a gravel road with a trailer behind you. Subaru lines up the whole system along the middle of the vehicle, which evens out weight on both sides and keeps you firmly connected to the road. Four decades of owner-tested Subaru vehicles have proven its durability, so you can count on it year after year.

Most trims add X-MODE for even more traction. The Premium comes with X-MODE, and X-MODE with Hill Descent Control is available to fine-tune the engine, transmission, and other systems on slippery ground. The Premium Hybrid, Sport, Sport Hybrid, Wilderness, Limited, Limited Hybrid, Touring, and Touring Hybrid step up to dual-function X-MODE with snow, dirt, deep snow, and mud settings.

What Safety Tech Comes Standard on the Forester?

Every 2026 Forester comes with EyeSight Driver Assist Technology as standard equipment. It works like a second set of eyes watching the road, and it can step in on the brakes when needed. Key features include:

  • Automatic Pre-Collision Braking warns you and can apply full braking force in an emergency to help you avoid or reduce a frontal impact.

  • Pre-Collision Throttle Management can cut engine power to help lower the force of a possible impact.

  • Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering helps with steering, braking, and throttle while holding the following distance you set.

Automatic Emergency Steering is also available. It can provide automatic steering and pre-collision braking support when there's enough room to steer clear of a collision. On a long highway stretch out of Topeka, these features help take some of the stress off the drive.

How Much Room Does the 2026 Subaru Forester Have for Gear?

The 2026 Subaru Forester gives you up to 74.4 cubic feet of cargo space, more than the Toyota RAV4 or Mazda CX-5. Passengers get up to 110.8 cubic feet of room, more than the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, or Mazda CX-5.

That space pairs nicely with towing. Coolers, tents, and duffel bags can ride in the cabin, and the trailer can carry the bulky stuff. An extra-wide rear gate opening and an available hands-free, foot-activated Power Rear Gate make loading easy when your arms are full.

The cabin brings plenty of tech too. The Subaru Multimedia System is standard on all trims, and every trim above the Base adds an 11.6-inch high-resolution touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Wireless charging is available, and seating choices include leather- and Dinamica-trimmed upholstery or durable StarTex.

2025 Subaru Forester Performance & Handling

We’ve talked a few times already about the upcoming, all-new 2025 Subaru Forester, but today we thought we’d focus on details regarding its performance and handling. The Subaru Forester has become one of the most popular models on the lineup, building itself a worthy legacy through the years. Now entering its sixth generation and 27th year in production, we’re pleased to be able to provide it to shoppers here in Topeka. Powertrain Specs & Features This year, every single Forester model will come standard with a 2.5L SUBARU BOXER engine capable of generating 180 horsepower alongside 178 pound-feet of torque alongside a Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission system. For drivers who prefer the old feel of manual driving, the Premium, Sport, Limited and Touring models offer steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters and a manual mode with eight preset ratios to control. The new powertrain also features both Active Torque Vectoring and an SI-Drive performance management system as standard features as well. Depending on which trim level you opt for, you’ll get 17-, 18- or 19- alloy wheels which will also affect how the vehicle performs and handles. Engineers also included a modified version of the dual-pinion electric power steering rack found in the performance-oriented Subaru WRX. This means enhanced responsiveness thanks to more direct and natural steering. Handling is greatly enhanced thanks to a revised version of the Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system that responds quicker and delivers better control on surfaces both on and off the road. This is supplemented by X-MODE with Hill Descent Control, which comes standard on the Premium trim level. Incline Start Assist is also standard across the line.
