Tesla might not have been the first brand to build an electric vehicle, but they definitely revolutionized and popularized the modern mass-produced battery electric vehicle. But now, there are a ton of true EVs on the market, including our very own 2024 Subaru Solterra. We thought we’d see how it stacks up to gold standard by comparing it to the 2024 Tesla Model Y, so check out below to learn about the conclusions to which we came.
EV Range & Charging
There’s a reason the Tesla Model Y is the gold standard in this segment, but we’re definitely proud of what Subaru has put up to compete with it. While the Tesla Model Y has an outstanding EV range of 260 to 310 miles depending on which battery you choose, the Solterra offers a very impressive 222 to 228 miles. When it comes to charging, the Solterra can achieve 158 miles in 35 minutes of charging, compared to the Model Y’s 200 miles in 28 minutes.
Powertrain Specs
Tesla is well-known for its breakneck performance, so it’s no surprise that the Model Y has a ridiculous powertrain that can deliver up to 295 or 455 horsepower depending on which powertrain you choose. The Solterra EV is nothing to sneeze at itself, though. While it isn’t a sports car like the Tesla Model Y, it still delivers a respectable 215 horsepower.
Safety Features
As with any comparison we’ve done for a Subaru vehicle, it’s difficult even for the incredible Tesla Model Y to stand up to Subaru EyeSight. When it comes to safety features, we definitely think the Solterra has the edge. While the Model Y does deliver some driver assistance features of its own, we’re not sure it measures up to everything EyeSight has to offer.
