Subaru Head Gaskets 101

The head gasket on every Subaru model with an internal combustion engine seals the space between where the cylinder heads meet the cylinders. The head gasket's integrity is critical for engine operation because it seals the space and allows for maximum compression with each exhaust stroke. When a head gasket loses integrity and the seal is compromised, coolant fluid and engine oil can comingle inside the engine as they penetrate the combustion chamber and foul spark plugs. A blown head gasket is a serious threat to the engine and we don't recommend driving very far after noticing any of the warning signs of a defective gasket.

What are the Signs of a Blown Head Gasket?

Few phrases can invoke panic like these words from a technician - "blown head gasket." Although we know that some makes and models are more prone to blown head gaskets than others, Subaru engineers some of the most durable head gaskets on the road today. However, the extreme engine environment where head gaskets work, plus their thin material design, will ultimately cause all head gaskets to lose integrity regardless of the make and model. If your vehicle is experiencing these warnings, it is time to replace the gasket:

• Coolant leaking under the exhaust manifold
• Exhaust smoke is whiter than usual
• Engine overheats
• Oil has a white or milky consistency
• Fouled spark plugs
• Dashboard warning light
