It's hard to pin down which segment is the most popular when it comes to crossovers, but the compact crossover class might take the cake. With models like the Subaru Forester and Honda CR-V, you know it has some heavy hitters. We thought we'd see how our big-name compact measures up to one of, if not its biggest competitor. The 2022 model year was a big one for both models, as the Forester received a facelift and the CR-V officially entered its sixth generation. Both models are now available for the 2023 model year, so let's see how they fare.
 

Efficiency, Power & Towing

When it comes to powertrains, the Subaru Forester offers a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine while the Honda CR-V is powered by a 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Unfortunately, the CR-V takes a slight edge in performance, with 190 horsepower to the Forester's 182 hp, but the Forester fires back with a couple advantages of its own. It offers an extra 3 miles per gallon combined fuel efficiency and can tow up to 3,000 pounds, twice as much as the CR-V.
 

Safety Features & Tech

When it comes to safety features and advanced driver-assistive safety technology, both models are near the top of the class. Subaru EyeSight has won tons of awards, but Honda Sensing is another heavy hitter in the space. Both models come standard with their respective suites. While neither model has been tested by the IIHS yet this year, looking back to the previous model year the Forester achieved TOP SAFETY PICK+, while the CR-V achieved TOP SAFETY PICK.
 

Space & Capacity

How much space for passengers and capacity for cargo the vehicles have is another important area to look at in a comparison like this. While the Subaru Forester offers quite a bit of extra passenger volume for you and your companions to get comfortable in - 111.6 to 104 cubic feet - the Honda CR-V unfortunately has a slight edge in cargo capacity. It offers up to 76.5 cu. ft. of space to fill with your luggage, groceries or what have you, which is 2.3 cu. ft. more than the Forester.
